How to track a project budget in Odoo Community
Updated 2026-10-25
What standard Odoo Community offers
- Analytic accounting stores vendor bills, expenses, timesheets and stock costs on the project's analytic account.
- Purchase lets you put the project in the analytic distribution of an order line.
- There is no budget on the project, and nothing compares open purchase orders with what is left.
Doing it by hand
Keep the budget per cost type in a spreadsheet. List the analytic items of the project's account, group them by category, and add the confirmed purchase orders that are not billed yet. It works, but it is out of date as soon as a buyer confirms the next order.
A budget on the project
- Install Project Budget Tracker on Odoo.sh or your own server.
- Open a project with an analytic account and add budget lines in the Budget tab: labour, purchases, expenses, materials or other costs.
- Actual costs come from the analytic account and timesheets; confirmed purchase orders not billed yet show as committed.
- Choose Warn or Block: a purchase order that would go over the purchase budget shows a warning before it is confirmed, or needs a project manager.
- Follow every project's status in the project list or under Project / Reporting / Budgets.

FAQ
Does Odoo Community have budgets?
No. Budgets are an Enterprise feature; Community records costs on analytic accounts without a budget to compare them with.
Are open purchase orders part of a project's costs in Odoo?
Not in the analytic items: they only appear when the bill is posted. Project Budget Tracker counts them as committed until then.
